His research concentrates on integrating of mass spectrometry and microbial sequencing data to answer important biological questions of host-host and host-microbe interaction.

Anna Di Nardo

Anna Di Nardo, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist who oversees the High Risk Pigmented Lesion Clinic. She also specializes in mole mapping and digital dermoscopy to detect early-stage melanoma.

As an associate professor in the Department of Dermatology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Di Nardo leads her research lab, which focuses on mast cells and skin immunology. She has published over 100 scientific articles in top journals, including Nature MedicineJournal of Immunology and Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

From 1995-2001, Dr. Di Nardo was a clinical associate at University Hospital in Modena, Italy. From 2001-2005, she held the same position at San Gallicano Dermatological Institute (IRCCS) Rome.

Dr. Di Nardo completed fellowships at UC San Francisco School of Medicine and UC San Diego School of Medicine. She served her residency in dermatology at the University of Modena in Italy. She earned her medical degree from the University of Pavia, Italy, and her PhD in skin immunology and allergy at the University of Modena, Italy. Dr. Di Nardo is board-certified in dermatology.

She is a member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, American Academy of Dermatology and the American Association of Immunologists.

Dr. Di Nardo is a recipient of the National Eczema Association Award and the Johnson & Johnson Focus on Giving Award for Outstanding Research.

She enjoys cooking, running, skiing, swimming and spending time with her family.

Dr. Greg Maguire is a former professor of neuroscience and ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He was visiting associate professor of physiology at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, visiting assistant professor of molecular neurobiology at the University of Washington, and a visiting scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), at Harvard University.

Awarded a prestigious Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Maguire managed his NIH funded laboratory at UCSD studying tissue degeneration and regeneration, and the role of stem cell released molecules(SRM) through paracrine and autocrine actions to maintain, repair, and regenerate human tissues. His NIH funded studies of systems biology and reverse engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and stem cell biology at UC San Diego led to the development of adult stem cell-based S2RM technology for the development of therapeutics and medical procedures. Dr. Maguire has over 100 publications and is currently working on his book entitled, “Spontaneous Stem Cell Healing.” He is co-founder of the SRM Living Foundry at UCSD in San Diego, and is Chief Scientific Officer & Founder of BioRegenerative Sciences, Inc.

Ingmar studied bioscience engineering at the University of Leuven, graduated in 2007 and obtained a PhD in cell and gene technology in 2011. He has an expertise in the field of probiotics, its molecular mechanisms and the topical application of these beneficial bacteria to restore the human microbiome. As bioengineer and microbiologist, he feels that it is important to translate this scientific research into daily products from which people at home and the community can benefit.

In the context of YUN, he is closely working together with the Department of Bioscience Engineering of the University of Antwerp, the Lab of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology of prof. Sarah Lebeer, the Lab of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy of prof. Filip Kiekens, prof. dr. Julien Lambert (dermatology) and dr. Gilbert Donders (gynaecology, the University Hospital of Antwerp).

He has experience with leadership in multiple R&D projects and he held a managing role in YUN’s R&D projects of the Flemish Institute for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Research in Industry (VLAIO). YUN’s current range of probiotic products and therapies were developed under his supervision.

Dr. Kasthuri Venkateswaran (Venkat) is the Senior Research Scientist at NASA – Jet Propulsion Laboratory and supports Biotechnology and Planetary Protection Group. His 39+ years of research encompass marine, food, and environmental microbiology. He is also leading ISS “Microbial Observatory” projects to measure microorganisms associated with U.S. nodes, as well as Kibo Japanese Experiment Modules.

Dr. Kasthuri Venkateswaran (Venkat) is the Senior Research Scientist at NASA – Jet Propulsion Laboratory and supports Biotechnology and Planetary Protection Group. His 39+ years of research encompass marine, food, and environmental microbiology. He is also leading ISS “Microbial Observatory” projects to measure microorganisms associated with U.S. nodes, as well as Kibo Japanese Experiment Modules. He has applied his research in molecular microbial analysis to better understand the ecological aspects of microbes, while conducting field studies in several extreme environments such as deep sea (2,500 m), spacecraft mission (Mars Odyssey, Genesis, Mars Exploration Rovers, Mars Express), assembly facility clean rooms (various NASA and European Space Agency [ESA] facilities), and the space environment in Earth orbit (ISS; ESA Columbus facility). He directs several research and development tasks for the JPL – Mars Program Office, which enables the cleaning, sterilization, and validation of spacecraft components. He directs several NASA competitive awards on the microbial monitoring of spacecraft and associated environments for the Exploration System Mission Directorate, closed habitats like ISS or its Earth analogues for the Human Exploration and Operation Mission Directorate. Also, he provides expertise for non-NASA programs such as commercial agencies (Boeing – airline cabin air measurement), medical industries (tissue and organ transplants processing) in measuring microbial pathogens that are problematic and health related. The bioinformatics databases generated by Venkateswaran’s team are extremely useful in the development of biosensors. Further, these models or information in database are extrapolated to what is known about the spacecraft surfaces and enclosed habitats in an attempt to determine forward contamination as well as develop countermeasures (advance cleaning and sterilization technologies) to control the problematic microbial species. Specifically, his research into the study of clean room environment using state-of-the art molecular analysis coupled with nucleic acid and protein-based microarray, will allow accurate interpretation of data and implementation of planetary protection policies of present missions, helping to set standards for future life-detection missions.

After his medical studies at the Unversities of Wuerzburg, Berlin and Vienna, MD thesis work at the University of South Florida, Tampa, USA, and an internship at the University Hospitals of Basle and Zurich, Switzerland, Ralf graduated from the Free University of Berlin (1987).

Following post-doctoral research at Yale University (1987-90), where he became interested in hair research, Ralf trained as a clinical dermatologist in Berlin, where he became consultant dermatologist and junior faculty at the Charité University Hospital. From 1999-2004 Ralf served as Professor and Vice-Chair of the Dept. of Dermatology, University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, University of Hamburg. He was Visiting Scholar at the University of California San Diego (1992), Visiting Professor at the Dept. of Molecular Medicine at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry, Munich-Martinsried (2005), and Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Bradford until 2010 and again since 2012. From 2005-2013, Ralf's primary affiliation was as Professor and Head of Experimental Dermatology, Dept. of Dermatology, University of Luebeck, Germany.

In 2008, Ralf  joined the University of Manchester as Professor of Cutaneous Medicine (secondary affiliation), before moving his main laboratory to Manchester in 2013, where he has also served as Director of Research and Deputy of the Centre for Dermatology Research, University of Manchester, since 2014. From 2013-2016 Ralf had a secondary affiliation with the University of Münster, as Head of the Laboratory for Hair Research and Regenerative Medicine in the Dept. of Dermatology. During this time in his home town, Münster, he also founded "Monasterium Laboratory - Skin & Hair Research Solutions GmbH", for which Ralf acts as Chief Consultant.

Besides having served as President of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dermatologische Forschung (ADF, Berlin) and as Associate and Section Editor for the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Ralf has been Editor of Experimental Dermatology since 2007.

I am the CEO and Founder of Persona Biome, a San Francisco skin microbiome company.  Previously, I was Chief Medical Officer at AOBiome where I formulated and developed the Mother Dirt cosmetics, including AO Mist, the first live skin probiotic. I have an extensive background in natural products chemistry, microbiology, clinical medicine, dermatology, and pharmaceutical and cosmetic product development. I am board certified in Anesthesiology, have an MD from Stanford University, and a BS in Biochemistry from Cornell University. I have multiple patents and publications in the areas of chemistry, electrophysiology, clinical pharmacology, and the microbiome. I am a Co-Founder of CleanWell Company.

Tami Lieberman joined the MIT faculty in January 2018. She leads a computational and experimental research group focused on uncovering the principles governing colonization, niche range, and personalization in the human microbiome.

Tami trained in molecular biology and mathematics at Northwestern University, where she conducted research in the laboratory of Jon Widom and was funded by a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. She then earned a PhD in Systems Biology from Harvard University, where she conducted research in Roy Kishony’s laboratory. During her graduate research, Tami developed new genomic approaches for understanding how bacteria evolve during infections of individual people. As a postdoc in Eric Alm’s lab at MIT, she further developed and applied these genomic approaches to understand the microbes that colonize us during health. Tami has also made contributions to our understanding of antibiotic resistance, including the co-invention of a new platform for visualizing evolution in real time. Her work has been covered in the popular press, including online coverage from The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, The Boston Globe, and ArsTechnia.
